Support for Jeong Cheongrae's Merger Decision Voiced at Democratic Party Assembly
Some Supreme Council Members Oppose Integration with the Party for National Innovation
Kim Youngjin, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea often referred to as an "original pro-Lee Jae-myung" figure, commented at the party's general assembly on January 22 regarding Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheongrae's proposal for a merger. He stated, "If this is a decision made by Representative Jeong, it already constitutes a political determination," adding, "In fact, the merger should have already taken place. Discussions on the merger should have been held in advance. It's fortunate that we are at least discussing it now."
According to a summary of coverage by The Asia Business Daily on January 22, Democratic Party lawmakers discussed the merger issue during the latter part of the policy general assembly held that day. Two lawmakers, including Kim Youngjin and Nam Insun, voiced support for Representative Jeong's proposal. It is reported that some members of the Supreme Council expressed opposition. In total, four people-two in favor and two against-spoke on the matter.

Assemblywoman Nam Insun stated, "Representative Jeong did not announce a merger, but rather proposed a way to pursue one," adding, "Let’s make a decision through the general assembly and group discussions. Let’s not create division among ourselves." This was a suggestion to continue internal debate while respecting the political significance of Representative Jeong's decision.
On the other hand, multiple Supreme Council members reportedly expressed opposition during the general assembly. Additionally, some lawmakers publicly voiced their objections through social networking service (SNS) messages. Assemblyman Jang Cheolmin of the Democratic Party stated, "I oppose the unilateral pursuit of a merger without asking the will of the party members."
Earlier that morning, Representative Jeong held an urgent press conference at the National Assembly and officially proposed the merger, saying, "Let’s join forces," and, "I hope we can also contest the upcoming June 3 local elections together." In response, Cho Kuk, leader of the Innovation Party, said, "The Innovation Party fully agrees with Representative Jeong’s stated goals of the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration and the restoration of government power," and added, "I have instructed the prompt convening of the general assembly and the party executive committee."
