The First Community-School Shared Space in Daejeon
Scheduled for Completion in April 2027
The groundbreaking ceremony was held for the first school complex facility in Daejeon that will be accessible to both students and local residents within a school campus.
On January 22, the Daejeon Metropolitan Government hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Living SOC (Social Overhead Capital for Public Welfare) School Facility Complex Project” at Daejeon High School.
The school facility complex project aims to construct multi-purpose school facilities within school grounds that can be used by both students and local residents, supporting educational activities and expanding social overhead capital for the community.
The Daejeon High School project was selected through a public contest in September 2021. The design competition was held in January 2023, the architectural design was completed in April 2025, and a contractor was selected in August, followed by the demolition of the existing gymnasium by November.
The new school facility complex at Daejeon High School will have a total floor area of 5,600 square meters, with one basement level and three above-ground floors. The first floor will house a public library, the second floor will be dedicated to cultural facilities, and the third floor will feature a multipurpose gymnasium.
This groundbreaking ceremony included a presentation on the progress of the project so far and future plans, and served as a celebration of the construction of the new complex facility. Starting with the ceremony, the city plans to begin full-scale construction, aiming for safe and systematic progress with a target completion date of April 2027.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure that this complex facility becomes a hub for leisure activities for residents in Daejeon’s original downtown area and contributes to improving the educational environment for students.”
