Successor to Justice Noh Taeak
The Candidate Recommendation Committee to select candidates for the successor to Supreme Court Justice Noh Taeak (age 64, Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 16), who will retire on March 3, will convene on January 21.
The Supreme Court Justice Candidate Recommendation Committee will hold a meeting at 2:30 p.m. that day to narrow down the list of candidates to at least three. Chief Justice Cho Heedae will select one among them and recommend the nominee to President Lee Jaemyung for appointment.
The justice to be appointed this time will succeed Justice Noh Taeak. Since President Lee took office in June of last year, this will be the first appointment of a Supreme Court justice during his tenure.
The chairperson of the Candidate Recommendation Committee is Choi Jaecheon, Professor Emeritus at Ewha Womans University. Ex officio committee members include Senior Justice Noh, Park Youngjae, Chief Judge of the National Court Administration, Jeong Seongho, Minister of Justice, Kim Jeonguk, President of the Korean Bar Association, Choi Bongkyung, President of the Korean Law Professors Association, and Hong Daesik, Director of the Law School Council.
Among the non-ex officio members, external figures include Professor Emeritus Choi, Kim Miyeon, Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Park Guicheon, Professor at Ewha Womans University Law School. Han Jihyeong, Chief Judge of the Masan Branch of the Changwon District Court, was appointed as a judicial member who is not a Supreme Court justice.
A total of 39 individuals have been listed as candidates for Supreme Court justice. Out of 94 people who were recommended both internally and externally, 36 judges, 1 lawyer, and 2 professors agreed to be reviewed by the Candidate Recommendation Committee. Four women are among the candidates.
