On January 21, President Lee Jaemyung expressed his concerns regarding the controversy over Lee Hyehoon, the nominee for Minister of Planning and Budget, who has not even undergone a confirmation hearing. He said, "I did not expect this would become such an issue." However, he also asked for public understanding regarding his efforts to appoint figures from the conservative bloc.
During a New Year's press conference that day, President Lee stated, "The issue concerning this nominee is truly one of the most difficult matters," adding, "We have not yet decided how to proceed regarding the nominee, including whether to request a resubmission of the confirmation hearing report." He continued, "What I regret is that I wanted to have a public opportunity to hear her side, and to make a decision after listening to the judgment of the people who observed the confirmation process. It is unfortunate for her that even this was blocked, but I am also deeply disappointed."
President Lee also revealed the difficulties involved in the personnel verification process. Regarding the opposition party, where the nominee previously worked, raising allegations, he said, "It feels as if they are punishing a traitor like in The Godfather, attacking us with things we do not know about. Of course, those who have done questionable things are at fault, but it is difficult for us to be aware of everything. I wonder if this is what politics is."
Regarding criticism from his own supporters about the nomination, he said, "Until I was elected president, I was a representative of one side, but from the moment I was elected, I firmly believe I must represent everyone," adding, "Even if we do not lose our principles, let us try to find a path where everyone can move forward together."
He further stated, "Although we may have fought by dividing sides, the fight is over now, and we must move toward becoming a unified nation that represents everyone. That is an important duty of the president, but I feel I am not fulfilling it as much as needed," and added, "I hope people will understand the necessity of such integration."
