Jeju Air announced on January 21 that it will strengthen its regulations regarding carry-on portable batteries, implementing a complete ban on the use of portable batteries in the cabin starting January 22.
Currently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Guidelines for Carry-on Portable Batteries and Electronic Cigarettes" prohibit charging portable batteries in the cabin. However, Jeju Air has decided to prohibit the use of portable batteries altogether in order to reduce the risk of fire associated with lithium-ion batteries.
To minimize inconvenience for passengers, Jeju Air has posted a notice about the complete ban on the use of portable batteries on its official website. The airline will also inform passengers of the ban through notification messages, check-in kiosks, and airport check-in counters.
Since February of last year, Jeju Air has been operating with fire suppression pouches on board. In accordance with the implementation of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's strengthened safety management standards, since March, passengers have been required to keep portable batteries on their person or in visible locations after taking measures to prevent battery short circuits. In August, temperature-sensitive stickers were attached to the shelves inside the aircraft.
A Jeju Air representative stated, "With a series of fires caused by portable batteries both domestically and internationally, this is a measure to reduce the risk of in-flight fires," and added, "For a safe journey, we ask that you fully charge your mobile devices before boarding."
