Discussing Industrial Transformation with Global Leaders
Expanding Group-wide Collaboration with Palantir
"Connecting Data Flows into a Unified Decision-Making System"
Chung Ki-sun, Chairman of HD Hyundai, attended the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF, also known as the Davos Forum) held in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss the mid- to long-term direction of artificial intelligence (AI) and the energy industry. As the reorganization of the global industrial order accelerates, he addressed both technology and energy issues.
HD Hyundai announced on January 21 that Chairman Chung participated in key official sessions of the Davos Forum, where he discussed industrial structural changes driven by AI and the energy transition with global leaders. This year's Davos Forum, held under the theme "A Spirit of Dialogue," runs from January 19 to 23. It is a venue where leaders from the business, political, and academic spheres gather to discuss global issues and solutions. This marks Chairman Chung's fourth consecutive attendance at the Davos Forum since 2023.
Discussions on the energy sector were also held in parallel. Following last year, Chairman Chung is scheduled to attend the "Oil & Gas Governors" meeting, where he will exchange views on changes in the global energy market environment, the energy transition, energy security, and technological innovation.
On the second day of the Davos Forum, January 20 (local time), he met with Alex Karp, founder and CEO of enterprise AI company Palantir Technologies, and agreed to expand their existing partnership.
With this agreement, HD Hyundai will broaden the scope of its collaboration with Palantir from select affiliates to the entire group. Key affiliates such as HD Hyundai Electric, HD Hyundai Robotics, and HD Hyundai Marine Solution will be included. The intention is to operate data analytics AI tools, which were previously used at the individual business unit level, within a more integrated system.
Since 2021, starting with HD Hyundai Oilbank, HD Hyundai has been gradually introducing Palantir's big data solutions and AI platform (AIP) into its core businesses, including shipbuilding and offshore, energy, and construction equipment. The expansion of this partnership is largely seen as an effort to streamline the way data is utilized across different business divisions.
Chairman Chung stated, "We are in the process of connecting data and work flows across the entire group into a unified system to refine our decision-making structure," adding, "We are focused on leveraging AI-based analytics capabilities to enhance the speed and consistency of our judgments." CEO Alex Karp commented, "HD Hyundai is a company that has accumulated a wide range of data in global industrial settings," and noted, "The collaboration between our two companies can serve as an opportunity to expand AI use cases centered on industrial sites."
Looking ahead, HD Hyundai plans to establish a Center of Excellence (CoE) with Palantir to build internal capabilities in data analytics and AI utilization. The company aims to lay the groundwork for applying AI across management and on-site operations over the mid- to long-term, rather than focusing on short-term results.
