About 60 Gather at Headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul to Pay Tribute
"Management of Moderation and Responsibility"...Vowing to Carry On the Legacy
Samyang Group held a memorial service to mark the fifth anniversary of the passing of the late Honorary Chairman Kim Sangha, announcing its commitment to continue the management philosophies of "moderation" and "responsibility." Honorary Chairman Kim is remembered for his words: "Because I bear the greatest responsibility in the company, I reflect on myself three times a day."
On the 21st, Samyang Group announced that it had held the memorial service for the late Honorary Chairman Kim at the auditorium of its headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 20th. Honorary Chairman Kim passed away on January 20, 2021, at the age of 95. The ceremony was attended by his eldest son, Kim Won, Vice Chairman of Samyang Corporation, his second son, Kim Jung, Vice Chairman of Samyang Packaging, other family members, Kim Yoon, Chairman of Samyang Group, as well as relatives and both former and current executives and employees. The event also saw the presence of more than 60 attendees, including former Chairman Park Yongseong and Advisor Cho Gunho, both former and current executives of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and former Chairman Bang Yeol and other former and current executives of the Korea Basketball Association.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence, followed by a biography report, memorial address, screening of a tribute video, floral tribute, and a speech from the family representative. The seven-minute tribute video featured Honorary Chairman Kim's notable quotes and chronicled his life, which emphasized responsibility and restraint across various aspects, including corporate management, social contribution, and communication with employees.
Speaking as the family representative, Kim Won, Vice Chairman of Samyang Corporation, said, "Five years have passed, but my longing for my late father remains as strong as ever. I believe that the true way for future generations to honor him is to inherit and further develop his legacy." He added, "I will do my utmost to ensure that my father's life and honor are never diminished."
Honorary Chairman Kim Sangha was the fifth son among seven sons and six daughters of Samyang Group founder Kim Yeonsu. Born in Seoul in 1926, he graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in political science and joined Samyang Corporation in 1949. During the 1950s and 1960s, he led the company’s expansion into the sugar and synthetic fiber industries, spearheading the adoption of new technologies and the construction of factories.
Serving as both President and Chairman of Samyang Corporation, he expanded the company’s business portfolio centered on food and chemical materials by venturing into terephthalic acid (TPA), an essential raw material for polyester fiber, as well as engineering plastics and starch and starch sugar businesses. Around the time he became Chairman of the Group in 1996, he also entered the packaging and pharmaceutical/bio sectors, securing new growth engines for the future.
Beyond corporate management, he contributed to the broader economy and society by serving as Chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of the Korea-Japan Economic Association, Co-Chairman of the Second Foundation Committee, President of the Korea Basketball Association, President of the Environmental Preservation Association, and participated in over 100 organizations. As Chairman of the Soodang Foundation, Yangyoung Foundation, and Haseo Academic Foundation, he also devoted himself to nurturing talent and advancing academic research.
A Samyang Group representative stated, "Honorary Chairman Kim was a business leader who embodied the values of moderation and humility and dedicated himself to industrial development. We will carry forward the vision of our predecessors as Samyang Group prepares for the next 100 years."
