This meeting was convened as a proactive measure to minimize casualties and inconvenience to citizens due to the cold wave, which is expected to be the longest and most severe of this winter.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, temperatures in inland areas are forecast to drop to around minus 15 degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong winds. The meeting focused on response plans for potential health risks due to lower perceived temperatures, frozen water pipes, transportation disruptions, and other possible impacts on daily life.
Yangju City will maintain an integrated response system centered on the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, with a focus on protecting vulnerable groups from the cold, managing essential infrastructure such as water supply, energy, and communications, inspecting agricultural and livestock sectors as well as public and private facilities, and promoting traffic safety and citizen guidelines.
In particular, the city plans to strengthen on-site monitoring and welfare checks for vulnerable groups in towns, townships, and neighborhoods, and to regularly inspect the operation of cold wave shelters to ensure a system capable of immediate response in the field.
Yang Suhyun, Mayor of Yangju City, emphasized, "A cold wave is not merely a weather phenomenon but a disaster directly affecting citizens' lives. I urge all relevant departments, towns, townships, neighborhoods, and related agencies to work closely together, centered on the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, to do their utmost to protect vulnerable groups and prevent inconvenience in daily life."
Yangju City plans to maintain its situation management system and continue publicizing citizen guidelines and field-oriented responses until the cold wave warning is lifted.
