A 30-Year Hobby of Astronomy Observation Inspired by Dreams of Becoming an Astronomer
Gaining Attention with "Byulmung" Content That Combines Camping and Stargazing
New Binoculars Raise 70 Million Won in Two Weeks of Crowdfunding
"The countless stars visible in the night sky each hold a different moment in time. This sense of mystery helps me forget worldly worries and gives me a feeling akin to meditation."
'Ujujulge' is a YouTube channel featuring astronomy observation content based on telescopes and binoculars, with over 12,000 subscribers. Targeting the 7 million camping population, it has gained attention for its so-called "Byulmung" (the hobby of stargazing) content, which combines astronomy observation with camping. As a result, it has established itself as a go-to channel for beginners in astronomy observation.
Moon Heeyoung, CEO of Ujujulge, who runs the channel, spent 20 years in the fashion industry handling e-commerce and online marketing. He first became interested in astronomy observation as a student dreaming of becoming an astronomer, and has enjoyed the same hobby for over 30 years.
He began operating the channel in earnest about 7 to 8 years ago. As a marketer, Moon had a habit of personally experiencing new media as they emerged. As a trial, he uploaded a video of the moon filmed through a telescope on YouTube, and people interested in astronomy observation left various questions in the comments. Instead of replying to each comment individually, he started running the YouTube channel by creating videos that answered the most frequently asked questions.
Having enjoyed camping as a hobby for 15 years, Moon realized that most activities are concentrated during the day, and there is a lack of things to enjoy at night after dinner. As a result, he has continued to combine "Byulmung" with camping culture. The channel provides tips on how to operate and use astronomical telescopes, shares information on interesting celestial objects to observe, and even shows actual observation footage filmed by himself. Rather than simply compiling clips from other videos, he shares his own observation and filming results, encouraging viewers to experience it for themselves.
Moon explained, "Many people admire astronomy observation, but most don't actually start because they think the barrier to entry is high. I thought that if I could solve this problem, it could spark a craze, so I decided to combine the two hobbies."
As more beginners in astronomy observation gathered on the channel, many inquiries about equipment recommendations came in. During this process, Moon often witnessed beginners, due to a lack of information, purchasing products that did not suit their needs or buying cheap, underperforming items, only to be disappointed and give up the hobby. This is what led him to enter the commerce business himself.

Recently, through the global e-commerce platform Cafe24, he has implemented YouTube Shopping features, displaying products in the channel's "Store" tab and within each piece of content. The flagship product is a 90mm refractor telescope. Capable of observing planets, Jupiter's moons, Saturn's rings, and sunspots, this product can be stored at a length of 95cm, making it easy to carry alongside camping gear without interference. Including the bag and solar filter, the price is in the low 300,000 won range. Moon personally participated in the inspection and production process of the telescope's lens, considered the heart of the device. As a result, the cumulative sales of telescope products first released three years ago have exceeded 1,700 units.
Moon continues to communicate with customers even after sales. He consistently gathers feedback and improves products through a community of over 1,400 buyers. This approach means the telescopes are not just released once and forgotten; instead, he continues to "version up" the products by reflecting user feedback, such as adding a focus lock screw. Recently, he has also focused on expanding the product lineup to provide more options for beginners. The new binoculars launched earlier this year through crowdfunding proved to be extremely popular, raising over 70 million won in about two weeks.
This year, he plans to introduce at least two new products, including a compact terrestrial telescope and an entry-level reflector telescope. Moon stated, "What I dislike most is seeing an expensive telescope end up as a laundry rack in the corner of a balcony. I don't want the relationship to end with the sale; I want to create a culture where we continue to share information and enjoy observation together after purchase, so that astronomy observation can become a lifelong hobby for everyone."
