Yeongcheon Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival Achieves “Excellent Festival” Status in North Gyeongsang Province for 8 Consecutive Years

Maintaining Its Status from 2019 to 2027
Secures 110 Million Won in Provincial Funding

The Yeongcheon Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival, a science and tourism convergence festival representing Yeongcheon City (Mayor Choi Kimoon), has demonstrated its status as Korea's leading starlight festival by being selected for the eighth consecutive year as an “Excellent Festival” designated by North Gyeongsang Province.

According to Yeongcheon City, at the North Gyeongsang Province Festival Review Committee evaluation held on January 16, the Yeongcheon Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival was ultimately chosen as an Excellent Festival, receiving high marks for its distinctive content and stable management capabilities.

With this selection, Yeongcheon City has secured a total of 110 million won (55 million won per year) in provincial funding over the next two years, through 2027.

The Yeongcheon Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival is centered around Bohyeonsan Observatory and Bohyeonsan Astronomical Science Center, the largest astronomical research facility in Korea. The festival offers astronomy and science programs such as stargazing, hands-on astronomy experiences, and expert lectures. It has established itself as an experiential festival targeting families and youth tourists.

The festival is held every October, when stargazing conditions are at their best, in the area surrounding the Bohyeonsan Astronomical Science Center. With the night sky as its theme, the festival leads the way in promoting “Yeongcheon, City of Stars,” where tradition and pristine nature come together.

Last year, under the slogan “Under Yeongcheon’s Starlight, Searching for Saturn’s Rings,” the festival attracted approximately 32,000 on-site visitors and 365,000 online participants who enjoyed the starlight festivities.

A city official stated, “Being selected as an Excellent Festival by North Gyeongsang Province is thanks to the continued efforts of citizens, tourists, and festival staff who have cherished the Starlight Festival,” adding, “We will continue to develop it into a festival that everyone can enjoy, based on Yeongcheon’s unique astronomy and science content.”

With this recognition as an Excellent Festival, Yeongcheon City plans to expand its night-time experiential programs at this year’s Bohyeonsan Starlight Festival, strengthen family-friendly content, and introduce programs reflecting the latest trends, thereby further enhancing its stature as a science culture-centered festival.
