A Ubisoft Developer's Heartfelt Request
GTA Studio Says "Good News Was Shared"
A Series with Over 400 Million Copies Sold Worldwide
The Next Installment Is the Most Anticipated Game in History
The globally renowned game "Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6)" has become a hot topic after reports emerged that it may have been shown in advance to a terminally ill patient prior to its official release.
On January 20, Yonhap News TV, citing the overseas gaming media outlet Insider Gaming, reported that Anthony Armstrong, a developer at the European game company Ubisoft, recently posted on the business social network LinkedIn that "a family member battling cancer has been given a prognosis of 6 to 12 months to live." He requested, "Since he is an avid fan of the GTA series, please allow him to play GTA 6 at least once before he passes away."
Armstrong stated to Rockstar Games that he was willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), and his post quickly spread among gamers. He later shared that "he was contacted by Rockstar and received good news," and the publisher Take-Two Interactive also commented, "It is good news," increasing the likelihood that the fan was actually able to play the game. However, the developer did not disclose any specific details. Upon hearing this news, online users responded with comments such as "This is the true romance of gaming," and "It feels even more special because it's GTA."
Meanwhile, GTA 6 is a major open-world game scheduled for release in November 2025. The GTA series has achieved cumulative global sales of over 400 million copies, with its predecessor GTA 5 selling more than 180 million copies. Released in 2013, GTA 5 generated $1 billion in revenue within just three days of its launch, setting a record as the fastest entertainment title to reach that milestone. Additionally, the first trailer for GTA 6 surpassed 90 million views on YouTube within a single day of its release, marking the highest view count ever for a game trailer.
