Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province will deploy two drones at disaster response sites in the first half of this year, aiming to secure the golden time during the initial stages of disaster occurrences. The city plans to establish a drone data video monitoring system in its Disaster Safety Situation Room to monitor various disaster situations in real time and support swift decision-making and on-site response.

This project was launched after Gumi City was selected for the “2026 Disaster Safety Situation Room Drone Data Integration Project,” a public contest conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety last year. The total project budget is 70 million won, with 25 million won from the national government, 7.5 million won from the provincial government, and 37.5 million won from the city government.

Gumi City will utilize the two drones to quickly assess the scale of damage in the early stages of a disaster, as well as to identify hazardous areas and monitor the potential spread of disasters in real time. The video footage and data collected on-site will be immediately linked to the Disaster Safety Situation Room, enabling not only requests for support from central and provincial authorities in the event of a large-scale disaster, but also collaborative response with relevant agencies such as the military, fire department, and police.

To enhance the safety and efficiency of drone operations, the city will gradually secure dedicated personnel who have completed specialized training. During normal times, the city will conduct pre-inspections and drills targeting disaster-prone areas and key infrastructure facilities, with the goal of continuously strengthening on-site response capabilities.

Gumi City Mayor Kim Jangho stated, “I believe that real-time information sharing using drones will play an important role in the disaster response process,” adding, “We will strive to ensure that the system for cooperation with related agencies operates smoothly through effective management and operation.”
