A video showing a man in China destroying his home because his wife purchased a dishwasher without his permission has gone viral, sparking controversy.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on January 19, a woman identified as Ms. A, who lives in Guangdong Province in southern China, shared a video on January 8 detailing her conflict with her husband. Ms. A reportedly bought a dishwasher worth 1,500 yuan (about 310,000 won) through an online platform without informing her husband.
"Doing the dishes in winter is hard"... Husband explodes in anger after wife buys a 310,000 won dishwasher
Ms. A explained that she needed a dishwasher because it was difficult to wash dishes with cold tap water during winter. Her husband only learned about the purchase when the installation technician arrived at their rented apartment, and he immediately demanded that the order be canceled and the dishwasher returned.
The husband cited concerns about water and electricity bills, as well as their household finances, but Ms. A countered that these were manageable. As the dispute over the installation continued, her husband became enraged and began smashing living room furniture and household items. The video clearly shows the disarray inside the home and the damaged belongings.
Ms. A later left the house, wandered the streets for a while, and spent the night at a nearby hotel. In the video, she expressed her frustration, saying, "I don't understand why buying a dishwasher is something that needs permission." However, Ms. A also mentioned that her inability to work last year due to illness and her husband's debt burden may have contributed to the conflict.
"Violence can never be justified" vs. "Wife lacks financial sense"
In the end, Ms. A returned the dishwasher the next day, and her husband reportedly apologized over the phone. Local internet users who watched the video reacted critically, saying, "Violence can never be justified for any reason," "It doesn't seem like such a heavy burden on the household," "I couldn't live a single day with a man like that," and "I feel sorry for the wife." On the other hand, some defended the husband, commenting, "She should have considered the household situation before buying," "The wife lacks financial sense," and "It's wrong to make such a decision without discussion."
Kedani, a family law specialist based in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, told SCMP in an interview, "Both parties have a responsibility to communicate." He pointed out, "Making spending decisions without considering the family's financial situation is not desirable," but also stressed, "Destroying property is clearly domestic violence and can never be justified for any reason."
