Yeonggwang County in Jeollanam-do announced on January 19 that it held a review committee for the selection of public reserve rice varieties on January 16 and selected the same two varieties, 'Saechungmu' and 'Sindongjin,' as in 2026 for the purchase of public reserve rice for the 2027 crop year.
Saechungmu is a variety known for its excellent disease resistance and lodging tolerance, enabling stable production for farmers, and is also recognized for its superior grain quality. Sindongjin, a representative rice variety produced in the region, was chosen due to its high preference among both local farmers and consumers.
Notably, Sindongjin was originally scheduled to be excluded from the list of public reserve rice purchase varieties starting in 2027. However, as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs decided to continue supplying government-certified seeds, the Public Reserve Rice Purchase Variety Selection Committee decided to retain Sindongjin as a purchase variety.
This measure is intended to minimize confusion among rice farmers and ensure stable shipments.
Meanwhile, following the revision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Notice (No. 2023-12), the labeling requirements for public reserve rice ton bags and sack packaging have changed starting in 2024.
Therefore, if existing ton bag packaging or ton bags used by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation for private purchases are used, public reserve rice purchases will not be permitted, and rice farmers are urged to exercise particular caution.
An official from Yeonggwang County stated, "By finalizing the public reserve rice purchase varieties early, we expect to provide practical assistance to farmers in establishing their farming plans," adding, "We will continue to support stable rice production and increased farm income by promoting field-oriented agricultural policies."
