Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has officially announced her intention to dissolve the House of Representatives on the 23rd.
On the 19th, during a press conference held at the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Takaichi personally revealed her plan to dissolve the House of Representatives on the opening day of the regular session of the National Diet, which is also scheduled for the same day.
As a result of this decision, there is a high likelihood that a general election in Japan will be held around February 8.
The period between the dissolution of the House of Representatives and election day will be just 16 days, marking the shortest campaign period for a general election since the end of the Pacific War.
This dissolution of the House of Representatives comes approximately one year and three months after the previous instance under the Shigeru Ishiba Cabinet on October 9, 2024. The statutory term for members of the Japanese House of Representatives is four years.
