On January 20, the police announced that they would minimize the deployment of mobile units at rallies and demonstrations, and instead actively utilize them for public safety operations.
The National Police Agency launched a task force on January 6 to shift the paradigm for responding to rallies and demonstrations and for personnel management, and is currently reviewing detailed tasks under its umbrella.
The Subcommittee on Transitioning Response to Rallies and Demonstrations, led by the Security Intelligence Bureau of the National Police Agency, is collaborating with the security, traffic, and investigation departments to discuss five key issues: strengthening pre- and post-event safety assessments, improving rally management methods, enhancing police station response capabilities, reinforcing the roles of rally organizers and related agencies, and amending laws related to rallies and demonstrations.
The Subcommittee on Utilizing Police Mobile Units for Public Safety, led by the Security Bureau, is working in cooperation with crime prevention, traffic, and investigation departments. The plan is to specify the missions, roles, and operational methods so that the mobile units can more systematically support public safety police activities by leveraging their mobility and organizational strength.
An official from the National Police Agency stated, "We will consolidate the results from the two subcommittees within this month to establish a final plan, which will be implemented in phases starting with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency."
