On January 19, Jeollanam-do held its first public hearing for residents at the main auditorium of the Yeongam Youth Center to widely gather public opinion on the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam.
The event drew more than 500 residents, filling the auditorium to capacity with keen interest and enthusiasm for the Gwangju-Jeonnam administrative integration.
At the public hearing, Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, personally provided residents with a detailed explanation of the background, necessity, and key special provisions of the Gwangju-Jeonnam administrative integration. A Q&A session was held on-site, allowing for direct communication and the collection of diverse opinions from residents.
To hear the perspectives of students, parents, teachers, and other residents on educational integration and address their questions, the Jeollanam-do Office of Education co-hosted the public hearing. Kim Daejung, Superintendent of Education, explained the educational integration plan and collected feedback afterward.
In particular, for residents who were unable to attend in person, the entire public hearing was broadcast live through the official Jeollanam-do YouTube channel.
Governor Kim stated, "On January 9, the Yeongam County Council was the first among all counties and cities to issue a statement urging the promotion of administrative integration. I deeply appreciate Yeongam's strength in embracing change," adding, "We will carefully review the balanced development integration proposal suggested by the county council, which is designed for residents to truly experience the benefits."
He continued, "Yeongam is the central hub for development in the southwest region, and I am confident that integration will be a new opportunity for Yeongam to leap forward. Through integration, we will significantly expand both financial resources and authority, allowing Yeongam to fully realize its potential."
He also emphasized, "Starting with the Yeongam County public hearing, we will visit each city and county, listen closely to every resident, and achieve a grand integration that reflects the will of the people."
Jeollanam-do plans to hold public hearings for residents sequentially in all 22 cities and counties. Any resident interested in administrative integration can participate by registering in advance through the QR code posted on the Jeollanam-do or respective city and county websites, or by registering on-site on the day of the event. The valuable opinions collected at the public hearings will be actively reflected in the process of enacting special legislation and promoting integration.
