Fundraising Begins for Electric Bus Conversion
Shinan County in South Jeolla Province is launching a fundraising campaign for the “Eco-friendly 1004 Bus Purchase” project, which aims to replace aging 1004 buses operating in island and remote areas with environmentally friendly electric vehicles through the Hometown Love Designated Donation Program.
According to the county on January 19, the 1004 buses have been in operation since 2019 to ensure mobility rights for residents in transportation blind spots, such as islands with low population density where it is difficult to run public buses.
However, concerns have been raised about safety issues and increased emissions due to the prolonged use of these vehicles. In response, the county has decided to introduce eco-friendly electric vans. This project has been organized as a Hometown Love Designated Donation Program, with fundraising scheduled to run for two years starting January 19, 2026.
The fundraising target for this project is 1.5 billion won, and the campaign period runs from January 19, 2026, to December 31, 2027. The donations collected will be used to purchase 25 electric buses and install 25 charging stations.
The county expects that this project will not only improve transportation convenience for residents in underserved areas but also contribute to addressing climate change by reducing carbon emissions.
Kim Daein, Acting Governor of Shinan County, stated, “We plan to strengthen transportation welfare by converting the 1004 buses to eco-friendly vehicles.”
