A Perfect Scene for the Camera
During the winter, when green maesaengi seaweed covers the sea, the maesaengi seaweed farm in Ongam Village, Daedeok-eup, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, has become a popular destination for photographers. The sight of green maesaengi spread across the calm water, combined with local fishermen harvesting the seaweed, vividly captures the winter landscape of this coastal village.

According to Jangheung-gun on January 19, the maesaengi seaweed farm in Daedeok-eup has recently gained a reputation as a must-visit winter photography spot, attracting photographers and photography club members from across the country. The optimal period for shooting is from late December to early February each year, when visitors can capture both the winter sea and scenes of maesaengi harvesting.
On weekdays, an average of about 200 visitors come to Daedeok-eup each day for photography, while on weekends, the number rises to around 500. On the weekend of January 17 and 18, approximately 1,000 people visited Ongam Village over two days, filling the area with photographers.
Photographers captured the ongoing maesaengi harvesting work from early morning until sunset. The contrast between the blue sea and the green maesaengi creates a unique winter coastal landscape.
The influx of visitors has brought new energy to the village, which is usually quiet during the winter. One photographer who visited the village commented, "In winter, there are limited subjects to photograph, but the maesaengi seaweed farm offers vibrant colors and atmosphere. I come back every year not only for the scenery but also because of the warm hospitality of the residents."
Song Byungseok, head of Daedeok-eup, stated, "Daedeok-eup's maesaengi is a representative winter health food rich in minerals such as calcium and iron. Since the visits from photographers are bringing vitality to the village, we will look into expanding convenient facilities and connecting with tourism resources."
