KOSPI Hits Intraday Record High, Eyes 4,900 Mark

KOSPI Hits 4,885.58 During Session
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Rebound
KOSDAQ Also Turns Upward

On January 19, the KOSPI renewed its record high and is now approaching the 4,900 mark. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have reversed course and are driving the index upward.

As of 10:59 a.m., the KOSPI stood at 4,882.71, up 0.87% from the previous day. At 11:09 a.m., it set a new record high at 4,885.58.

Despite a slight slowdown in the U.S. stock market last week, the continued strength of semiconductor-related companies such as Broadcom and Micron Technology appears to have had a positive effect on the domestic market.

In fact, semiconductor stocks such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which started the session lower, reversed to gains. As of 11:01 a.m., SK Hynix shares were trading at 771,000 won, up 1.85% from the previous session. Samsung Electronics also rose 0.13% to 149,100 won during the same period, reversing its earlier decline. Both stocks recovered from losses of more than 1% seen at the start of trading.

Hyundai Motor, which showed a sharp rise early in the session, further expanded its gains. As of 11:04 a.m., it was trading at 464,000 won, up 12.3% from the previous session. Kia (6.7%), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (2.5%), and Hanwha Aerospace (2.0%) also maintained upward momentum. Meanwhile, SK Square (-1.6%), LG Energy Solution (-1.6%), and Samsung Biologics (-1.2%) declined.

Foreign investors and institutions continued to be net sellers, offloading 151.8 billion won and 180.1 billion won, respectively. Only individual investors were net buyers, purchasing 228.2 billion won.

The KOSDAQ index, which had been slightly weaker at the start of trading, also reversed to gains. As of 11:04 a.m., it was up 0.78% from the previous session, at 961.99.

Foreign investors, who had been net sellers, turned net buyers with purchases totaling 117.2 billion won. In contrast, individual and institutional investors were net sellers of 26.3 billion won and 44.9 billion won, respectively.

Among the top 10 companies by market capitalization, Rainbow Robotics (4.6%) and Peptron (3.6%) posted the largest gains, followed by Leeno Industrial (1.2%), Ecopro BM (0.7%), and Legochem Biosciences (0.4%). Alteogen (-4.1%), HLB (-3.4%), and Samchundang Pharm (-1.9%) declined.
