Police Investigating Exact Circumstances of the Accident
Around 9:14 PM on January 18, 2026, a vehicle traveling near the Guri Tollgate on the Metropolitan Area 1st Circular Expressway in Topyeong-dong, Guri-si, Gyeonggi Province, collided with the guardrail on the shoulder.

As a result of this accident, two women in their 60s who were seated in the back died, while two men in their 60s who were seated in the driver’s and passenger’s seats were injured and received medical treatment.
Immediately after the accident, a tollgate employee made the initial report to emergency services, stating that a single-vehicle accident had occurred, and a total of five related reports were subsequently received. Upon receiving the report, fire authorities dispatched 11 vehicles and 33 personnel to the scene to manage the accident and carry out rescue operations.
A fire official who responded to the scene stated, "When we arrived, the vehicle had struck the guardrail on the shoulder with significant force."
The police are investigating the exact cause of the accident, examining factors such as drowsy driving or speeding, based on eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage from around the tollgate, and the vehicle's black box recordings. In particular, since the accident occurred just before entering the tollgate, authorities are considering the possibility of driver negligence and are looking into the circumstances from multiple angles.
