Amsa Library in Gangdong District to Reopen on January 20 After Completing Eco-Friendly Remodeling

Improved Energy Efficiency and Enhanced Reading Environment

Gangdong District Amsa Library, operated by Gangdong District (District Mayor Lee Soohee) in Seoul, will reopen on January 20 after completing six months of eco-friendly green remodeling construction.

Opened in 2010, Amsa Library was selected for the "Public Building Green Remodeling" project hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2023. Accordingly, Gangdong District carried out comprehensive environmental improvement work from July to December last year to enhance the energy performance of the aging building and address climate change.

This remodeling focused on eco-friendly energy efficiency and improving user convenience. The library significantly reinforced insulation on both the interior and exterior walls, installed high-performance windows, and introduced the latest heating and cooling systems, greatly reducing energy consumption. Additional upgrades included installing instant water heaters in the restrooms and improving other detailed facilities. The interior spaces were also reorganized with a user-centered approach to create a more comfortable reading environment.

The district explained that, through these efforts, it is both practicing ESG management aimed at achieving a carbon-neutral society and providing local residents with a higher-quality cultural space for reading.

To commemorate the reopening, a variety of programs will be offered. Starting January 20, there will be a photo exhibition showcasing the green remodeling process, docent-led tours, and a "Find the Green Points" stamp tour to explore the newly transformed library. On January 24, Professor Lee Jongwon, an expert in architectural engineering, will give a special lecture titled "A Library Story Told by an Eco-Friendly Architecture Expert." Additional events include hands-on experiences such as making binding books and keyrings, double book borrowing, and an amnesty event for overdue borrowers.

Kim Youngho, CEO of Gangdong Cultural Foundation, said, "I sincerely thank the residents who trusted and waited during the long closure," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that the newly renovated Amsa Library becomes a local hub where the community can gain knowledge and relaxation in an eco-friendly space."
