President Lee Jae-myung on January 18 highlighted the seriousness of fake news issues, stating that he personally reads online comments.
On this day, through his social media, President Lee said, "I also read comments from time to time and share them with cabinet members," adding, "If you want a country where the people are the true owners, then the owners must express their opinions."
The post included a video of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Kyunghoon reading comments left by citizens during a work report. When a comment stated, "The Space Aviation Agency is a worthy use of taxes," Deputy Prime Minister Bae responded, "Thank you."
President Lee also emphasized, "In this regard, fake news and manipulation of comments or likes-such public opinion manipulation-is a serious crime that destroys democracy," adding, "The police are currently investigating, and we are watching for the results."
At a cabinet meeting on December 30, President Lee instructed relevant ministries to conduct a fact-finding investigation, stating, "Manipulating the ranking of comments is not only an obstruction of work, but also an act of information manipulation that threatens the democratic system."
