Establishment of Working-Level Consultative Body
Administrative Competence Recognized
Seocho District in Seoul (District Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced on January 18 that it had received the Minister's Award in the "Outdoor Advertising Work Evaluation" organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. This is the only achievement among the 25 autonomous districts in Seoul.
At the end of last year, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted a comprehensive evaluation of local governments nationwide, assessing illegal advertising material management, the promotion of advertising culture, and banner recycling, and selected Seocho District as the winner.
Seocho District was highly rated for being the first in the country to establish a working-level consultative body among the district office, courts, prosecutors, and police for advertising material management, thereby creating a joint response system among related agencies.
Major achievements include the joint removal of illegal banners around Gangnam Station intersection, the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in cooperation with the police. Seocho District also became the first in the country to install facilities on pedestrian overpasses to prevent the attachment of advertising materials and attached protective sheets in areas where illegal banners are repeatedly posted.
The district encouraged legal advertising by offering LED electronic display boards (1,000 won per day) and village bus stop advertising boards (3,000 won per day) to small business owners at affordable rates. All 35.5 tons of collected waste banners were recycled, and in December of last year, the district established an ordinance to promote recycling, thereby laying an institutional foundation.
Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho District, stated, "This award is the result of our proactive response to illegal advertising materials and our continuous efforts to establish prevention-oriented policies and a sound advertising culture. We will continue to pursue outdoor advertising administration that realizes both public interest and environmental values."
