Trump Warns of Tariffs Over Greenland Annexation Non-Cooperation... Pressures Citing Security Grounds

Announces $50 Billion Increase in Rural Health Budget, Targeting Midterm Election Voters
Sends "Deep Respect" Message for Iranian Leadership's Suspension of Over 800 Executions
Reaffirms Hardline Stance on Minnesota Protests, Saying "Will Invoke Insurrection Act if Necessary"

U.S. President Donald Trump has wielded the "tariff card" against countries uncooperative with the issue of annexing Greenland. This move is interpreted as a blatant display of his determination to pursue his strategic objectives under the pretext of national security.

"Greenland is a Security Stronghold... Tariffs for Non-Cooperation"

On January 16 (local time), President Trump stated at the "Great and Historic Rural Health Investment" roundtable held at the White House, "For the sake of national security, we may impose tariffs on countries that do not cooperate with the issue of Greenland."

President Trump, who has consistently demonstrated a strong intention to annex Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, has emphasized that Greenland is a strategic hub connecting North America and Europe and a treasure trove of mineral resources. He has maintained the position that the United States must secure Greenland, particularly to block the expanding influence of China and Russia. He added that he would discuss this issue with NATO in the future.

The main topic of the meeting-rural support measures-was also detailed. The Trump administration decided to increase the budget by 50 billion dollars (approximately 73.7 trillion won) to modernize rural medical services. This funding will be used to strengthen rural hospital facilities, modernize technology, and expand personnel.

This is interpreted as a strategic move to solidify support from his core base of agricultural region voters ahead of the November midterm elections. President Trump remarked, "I put rural areas first," referencing his overwhelming victory in the previous presidential election.

International Issues Including Iran and Canada Mentioned

President Trump also commented on international affairs. He expressed "deep respect" for the Iranian leadership's cancellation of more than 800 scheduled executions. Having previously pressured the Iranian government by hinting at possible military intervention, this marks a conciliatory message for now.

Additionally, he responded positively to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's signing of a new trade agreement with China, stating, "He did what needed to be done." Trump also expressed his gratitude to Venezuelan opposition leader Machado, who nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize, and announced plans for further dialogue.

Meanwhile, regarding the protests against immigration enforcement in Minnesota, Trump stated, "If necessary, I will invoke the Insurrection Act," but clarified that it was not yet at the stage for immediate implementation.
