The National Office of Investigation at the Korean National Police Agency announced to the media on January 16 that "one civilian suspect has been asked to appear and is currently being questioned regarding the matter." However, the authorities stated that they could not disclose specific details such as the suspect's identity or the location of the investigation.

Previously, on January 10, a spokesperson for the General Staff Department of the Korean People's Army claimed in a statement that North Korean forces had shot down drones sent by South Korea in September of last year and again on January 4. In response, President Lee Jaemyung ordered an investigation led by a joint task force, stating, "If true, this would constitute a serious crime threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula and national security."
