"Unable to Leave Home for 13 Days"... Letting Her Guard Down at a Salon Led to 'Hair Dye Allergy' Ordeal

Swelling After Eyebrow Dyeing
Raises Awareness of Dye Allergies on TikTok

A Canadian woman experienced severe facial swelling after having her eyebrows dyed, to the point where she could barely open her eyes. She had an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the dye and was unable to leave her house for 13 days. Sharing her experience, she warned others to always undergo an "allergy test" before the procedure.

According to the British media outlet Daily Mail on January 16, Kelsey Cleve, 32, who lives in Vancouver, Canada, had her eyebrows dyed at a beauty salon on December 10 last month before a trip to Mexico. Eyebrow dyeing is a procedure that makes eyebrows appear darker and more defined using dye.

Immediately after the procedure, there were no unusual symptoms and she was satisfied with the results. However, the next morning, her eyebrows and the bridge of her nose began to swell. Within just a few hours, her entire face became puffy, and her eyes were almost swollen shut.

Cleve said, "The swelling started around my eyebrows and was especially severe on the bridge of my nose. At its worst, I could only see straight ahead and couldn't see to the sides at all." She added that it was not painful. She described herself as looking "like an alien," comparing her appearance to ET from the movies or a cartoon character with big eyes like a cricket.

She had previously experienced allergic reactions to hair dye and temporary henna tattoos, but had never had issues with the dye used at salons. For this reason, she believed that eyebrow dyeing would also be safe.

It took 13 days for the swelling in her face to subside. She took antihistamines on her own to calm the allergic reaction. Her face finally returned to normal on December 23, just before she left for her trip to Mexico.

Cleve posted her story on TikTok, urging others to always get an allergy test before dyeing their eyebrows.

She emphasized, "Even if you have never had an allergic reaction before, you must get a patch test." A patch test involves applying a small amount of the actual dye to a part of the skin and monitoring for a reaction over about 48 hours. Some beauty salons offer this test before the procedure.

Cleve added, "Even if you've never had an allergy before, I want to tell everyone to always get a patch test," and said, "From now on, I will always do it myself."
