Mayor Oh Sehoon Delivers Congratulatory Remarks
On January 15, Seodaemun District in Seoul (Mayor Seongheon Lee) held the "2026 New Year's Gathering," which also served as a New Year's concert, at the main auditorium of Yonsei University. On January 16, the district announced its renewed commitment to realizing "Happy Seodaemun 300%-Turning Dreams into Reality." The event was attended by over 2,000 people, including local residents, representatives of professional organizations, small business owners, and various figures from different sectors.

In his New Year's speech, Mayor Seongheon Lee shared five major visions with the residents: ▲ A premium future city with rapid and seamless growth ▲ A people-centered city with dignified history and a warm daily life ▲ A healing city within nature ▲ A city of robust care and new learning for children's happiness ▲ An international youth startup city where universities, young people, and future industries coexist.
Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon also attended the event, introducing major projects related to Seodaemun District, such as the development of the Hongje Station area, Moa Town, the Seobu Line light rail, and the undergrounding of the Inner Ring Road. He also presented the new year's city administration plan, including the "Revitalizing the Gangbuk Era" initiative.
Dukryong Kim, Chairman of the Kim Youngsam Democracy Center, attended as a congratulatory speaker. Seongin Son, President of the Seodaemun District branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association; Dongseop Yoon, President of Yonsei University; and Hyangsook Lee, President of Ewha Womans University, also delivered New Year's greetings via video message.
Following the New Year's gathering, the New Year's concert featured the "Seodaemun District Orchestra-Ham Shinik and Symphony Song," who, together with the Seodaemun District Children's Choir, vocalists, and violinists, presented a diverse array of music and songs over the course of an hour.
This year, the district plans to expand the Hongje Waterfall area into "Happy Square," connecting Seoul-style kids caf?s, caf? waterfalls, and a complex cultural center. It will also promote the Hongje Station area revitalization project and 56 redevelopment projects. Through the undergrounding of the Gyeongui Line and the multi-level complex development of Seongsan-ro, the district aims to foster a global startup ecosystem and nurture youth startups in the AI and bio sectors. Additional care and play spaces will also be established in each region.
Mayor Seongheon Lee stated, "In 2026, like the Red Horse, we will make a powerful leap forward, solidifying Seodaemun's strength and connecting it to a new future."
