The KOSPI surpassed the 4,800 mark for the first time in history as soon as trading opened on the 16th.
As of 9:15 a.m. on January 16, the KOSPI index was trading at 4,807.43, up 9.88 points (0.21%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 4,820.66, up 23.11 points (0.48%), breaking through the 4,800 mark for the first time ever. Foreign investors recorded a net sell of 157.5 billion won, while institutions sold a net 51.2 billion won. Individual investors were net buyers of 208.2 billion won.
By sector, insurance (5.06%), machinery and equipment (1.32%), securities (1.18%), electricity and gas (1.10%), and telecommunications (1.05%) saw gains. On the other hand, pharmaceuticals (-1.54%), medical precision equipment (-1.17%), non-metallic minerals (-0.59%), and paper and wood (-0.54%) declined.

Among the top market capitalization stocks, Samsung Life Insurance stood out with a sharp rise of 9.18%. This is believed to be due to the recent semiconductor boom, which increased the value of its stake in Samsung Electronics, leading to a rise in its share price. Kia, which has recently seen its stake in the U.S. robotics company Boston Dynamics gain attention, also rose by 4.20%. Other gainers included Doosan Enerbility (3.46%), Korea Electric Power Corporation (1.12%), Samsung Electronics (0.97%), Hanwha Aerospace (0.93%), and Samsung Electronics Preferred (0.47%).
In contrast, Samsung Biologics (-2.19%), Celltrion (-1.90%), Hyundai Mobis (-1.89%), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (-1.11%), Shinhan Financial Group (-0.88%), Samsung C&T (-0.87%), NAVER (-0.81%), and KB Financial Group (-0.69%) declined.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ index was at 946.44, down 4.72 points (0.50%) from the previous session. The KOSDAQ opened at 950.83, down 0.33 points (0.03%). Foreign investors recorded a net sell of 64.7 billion won, and institutions sold a net 1.9 billion won. Individual investors were net buyers of 71.6 billion won.
Among the top KOSDAQ market capitalization stocks, Classys (3.60%), Wonik IPS (1.80%), and Leeno Industrial (0.93%) rose. On the other hand, D&D Pharmatech (-4.87%), AIMEDBIO (-3.77%), Alteogen (-3.19%), HLB (-2.81%), ABL Bio (-2.39%), Rainbow Robotics (-2.31%), PharmaResearch (-2.12%), LIG ChemBio (-2.09%), Peptron (-1.94%), and Kolon TissueGene (-1.94%) showed weakness.
