This ceremony was organized to encourage the regional cooperation activities of military units in the province and to honor the achievements of soldiers who have dedicated themselves to the fields of national defense and security.
The 'Our Residents Movement of the Military' is a collaborative initiative between the military and the local community, involving projects such as military personnel transferring their resident registration, wildfire prevention, and regional volunteer activities. Since its inception in 2011, a total of 49 units have been selected over the past 15 years.
For 2025, four units were selected as outstanding units: the 36th Infantry Division, the 21st Infantry Division, the 2nd Engineer Brigade, and the 3rd Armored Brigade.
These units were highly praised for their excellent achievements in areas such as resident registration transfers, wildfire prevention activities, and civil support and volunteer work.
In particular, the 36th Infantry Division provided civil support during disasters and emergencies 33 times; the 21st Infantry Division participated in rural manpower assistance and after-school soldier instructor activities; the 2nd Engineer Brigade carried out 135 wildfire prevention activities; and the 3rd Armored Brigade achieved a resident registration transfer rate of 83.33% for new personnel, all demonstrating outstanding results.
The 12th Proud Gangwon Defense Award was given to three individuals: Master Sergeant Lee Seonggyu of the 12th Air Defense Battalion, 2nd Corps (Patriotism & Dedication); Master Sergeant Yoon Ilyoung of the 36th Infantry Division (Caring & Volunteerism); and Sergeant First Class Lee Giyeon of the 7th Infantry Division (Harmony & Cooperation).
The awardees were honored for their dedication to national defense and their contributions to community service, harmony, and cooperation.
Since its establishment in 2014, a total of 36 individuals have received the Proud Gangwon Defense Award as of this year, with recipients selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of their military spirit and contributions to the local community.
Governor Kim Jin-tae stated, "I deeply thank all military personnel for not only safeguarding national security but also actively cooperating with the local community," adding, "I hope that the mutual growth and cooperation between the military and residents will continue in the future." He further emphasized, "The province will spare no effort in providing the necessary support to ensure close cooperation between the military and the local community."
Meanwhile, Colonel Lee Junggu, Deputy Commander for Administration of the 21st Infantry Division, presented 111 blood donation certificates, which he had personally collected through his own donations, to Governor Kim Jin-tae at the '2025 Outstanding Units and Proud Gangwon Defense Award Ceremony' held at the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Trade Consultation Room, requesting that they be used for the benefit of Gangwon residents.
Going forward, the province plans to continue visiting sites where policies are most impactful and to actively reflect the voices of both residents and the military in its initiatives.
