Parents Can Customize Bedtime and Break Reminders for Children
High-Quality Content Recommendations for Young Viewers
"YouTube Strives to Ensure Safe and Beneficial Exploration of Information"
Going forward, parents will be able to directly set and manage their children's YouTube Shorts viewing time. Features will also be introduced to help children and teenagers encounter age-appropriate and beneficial content more frequently.
YouTube announced on January 15 that it has updated its protection features for children and teenagers. This update focuses on making it easier for parents to customize their children's YouTube experience.
First, parents will be able to directly set and manage their children's Shorts viewing time. A new feature has been added that allows the Shorts feed timer to be set to '0'. Building on existing digital wellbeing features for teenagers, parents can also customize bedtime and break reminders for their children. These features will be rolled out sequentially worldwide, including in Korea.
Creator guidelines will also be introduced to help ensure children and teenagers encounter age-appropriate content. After review by global expert organizations, standards will be provided for high-quality content suitable for young viewers, as well as for low-quality content that should be avoided.
YouTube plans to increase exposure to content that: ▲ fosters curiosity and inspiration; ▲ helps expand interests and horizons of thought; and ▲ develops the ability to adapt to the demands and challenges of daily life and to engage in positive behaviors.
Parents will also be able to create and manage new accounts for their children. Switching to a child account can be done easily through the mobile application, allowing children to conveniently watch content optimized for their age group under parental supervision.
Jennifer Flannery O’Connor, Vice President of Product Management at YouTube, stated, "YouTube believes that it is important not to isolate children from the digital environment, but to protect them within it."
Dr. Garth Graham, Head of YouTube Health and Public Health, said, "YouTube will continue to grow alongside families who watch YouTube and do its best to ensure that the next generation of users can explore reliable information in a safe and beneficial environment."
