Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced on January 15 that it has established the "Vietnam War Veterans Allowance" and will begin accepting applications for the allowance at the administrative welfare centers in each applicant's residential district starting this month. The allowance is available to Vietnam War veterans and the spouses of deceased Vietnam War veterans.
This new allowance was introduced in accordance with the revised "Dongducheon City Ordinance on the Honor and Support for National Veterans and Others," which was amended at the end of last month. Eligible applicants will receive a monthly payment of 150,000 won, starting from the month they apply. However, for those changing their allowance type, the existing allowance will be paid in January 2026, and the difference will be retroactively paid together with the February 2026 allowance.
The Vietnam War Veterans Allowance cannot be received in conjunction with other veterans' honor allowances. If a current recipient of another veterans' honor allowance wishes to switch to the Vietnam War Veterans Allowance, a new application must be submitted.
Park Hyungdeok, Mayor of Dongducheon City, stated, "We have established this allowance to honor the noble sacrifice and dedication of Vietnam War veterans who contributed to the Republic of Korea as it is today, and to support the livelihood stability of veterans as they enter old age."
For more information regarding the Vietnam War Veterans Allowance, inquiries can be made at the local administrative welfare center or the Welfare Policy Division of Dongducheon City.
