Retailers are focusing on attracting kids as customers, as they represent future clientele and the market size is rapidly expanding. Gwangju Shinsegae Co., Ltd. (CEO Lee Donghoon) has launched a campaign to win over young customers with a service offering a variety of benefits.


Global financial data service provider Pitch Book has predicted that the domestic kids industry market will reach 65 trillion won by 2025.


This is more than double the 31 trillion won recorded in 2012. The market is on an upward trajectory, driven by trends such as the "Gold Kids" phenomenon-where a single child is raised like a prince or princess-and the "Ten Pocket" phenomenon, where up to ten adults, including parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, spend on one child.


In line with this trend, Gwangju Shinsegae introduced its Kids Membership in the second half of last year. With the new year, the company is attracting kids and their families with an upgraded service offering even more benefits.


The Kids Membership is available to customers who have children born between 2014 and 2026 and who sign up through the Shinsegae Department Store app. The membership offers three main benefits.


The first benefit is a set of four welcome coupons: a 10,000-won discount on purchases of 100,000 won or more from children's brands, a 5,000-won discount on health food purchases of 100,000 won or more, a 5,000-won discount on F&B purchases of 10,000 won or more, and a 5,000-won discount on food market purchases of 30,000 won or more. These coupons are valid for 15 days from the date of membership and are issued only once upon joining.


The next benefit is a set of six monthly regular discount coupons. Starting from the month after joining, members receive six types of coupons on the first day of each month, including a 10,000-won discount on purchases of 100,000 won or more from children's brands. For example, if a customer joins on May 25, they will receive their first set of coupons on June 1 and can receive a total of seven sets by December 1. Each coupon is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.


Finally, members receive a monthly regular voucher, such as a free beverage at the Members Bar on the 4th floor of the main building. Like the regular discount coupons, these vouchers are issued monthly and are valid for 30 days from the date of issue.


To sign up for the Kids Membership, customers must visit the membership event booth on the first basement level of the main building and present identification and proof of family relationship. Memberships registered in 2025 will not be automatically renewed, so re-registration is required.


Lee Junyeon, Head of Sales Planning at Gwangju Shinsegae, said, "Since department stores are often visited by families, we have developed a specialized Kids Membership to cater to this. We hope many will take interest in the Kids Membership, which offers a variety of benefits and enjoyable experiences."
