Body Found in Truck Cargo Bed
Despairing Note Left Behind
A man in his 60s, who had been solely caring for his mother in her 80s suffering from dementia while struggling with financial difficulties, killed his mother and left her body in his vehicle before being apprehended by the police.
On January 15, Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced that they had urgently arrested and are currently investigating a man in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of murdering a direct family member.
Mr. A is suspected of killing his mother, Ms. B (in her 80s), who had dementia, at their home in Yongdu-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, on January 13.
The police received a report from another child stating, "I cannot reach my mother," and at around 9:30 p.m. on January 14, they found Mr. A on a roadside in Yongdu-dong and took him into emergency custody. The body of Ms. B was discovered in the cargo bed of the 1-ton truck that Mr. A was driving at the time.
An investigation revealed that Mr. A had been living alone with his mother without a steady job, enduring long-term caregiving responsibilities and severe financial hardship.
Inside Mr. A's truck, police found a note expressing despair over his situation, stating, "I am struggling because of financial difficulties. If I die, please cremate me." During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly confessed, saying, "I strangled my mother to death," and admitted to all charges.
The police plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of Ms. B's death. They also intend to apply for an arrest warrant for Mr. A after investigating the specific motive and circumstances of the crime.
