Strengthened Collaboration with Police and Fire Services Yields Results
Choi Woncheol: "We Will Achieve Safety Administration That Citizens Can Truly Experience"
Gongju City in South Chungcheong Province has demonstrated the effectiveness of its regional safety administration by achieving the highest grade in the crime category in the government’s officially announced “Regional Safety Index” assessment. This is seen as confirmation at the national level of the on-site, prevention-oriented system built through close cooperation among police, fire services, and local government.
On January 15, Gongju City announced that it attained the highest grade in the crime category in the 2025 Regional Safety Index assessment released by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The Regional Safety Index is a nationally certified indicator that comprehensively analyzes safety levels directly related to citizens’ daily lives-such as crime, fire, traffic accidents, public safety, infectious diseases, and suicide-to evaluate the safety capabilities of local governments.
Last year, the city saw its index rise in both the crime and fire categories, indicating a marked improvement in overall safety levels.
In particular, receiving the top grade in the crime category proved that Gongju City’s public safety policies and preventive administration are delivering effective results on the ground.
This achievement is attributed to the collaborative system of a dedicated task force jointly operated by Gongju City, Gongju Police Station, and Gongju Fire Station.
The agencies have worked together on crime prevention, fire response, and management of safety-vulnerable areas, enhancing information sharing and on-site response capabilities.
Additionally, ongoing public awareness campaigns and fire safety and first aid training aimed at improving citizens’ safety consciousness have also contributed to the improvement in the safety index.
Going forward, the city plans to establish a comprehensive action plan to further improve the local safety environment and strengthen its cooperative framework with relevant agencies, continuing its focus on accident prevention in safety administration.
Gongju City also intends to develop customized measures for relatively vulnerable areas such as traffic accidents and public safety, aiming to enhance safety balance throughout the city.
Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, “This achievement is the result of making safety the city’s top priority and the combined efforts of the administration and citizens. We will continue to strengthen weak areas and further reinforce our strengths to create a safer Gongju that citizens can feel in their daily lives.”
