Advanced Fraud Detection System and In-Depth Consultations
Full Prevention of Voice Phishing Losses
NH Nonghyup Capital announced on January 15 that it had detected three suspected cases of voice phishing during the personal credit loan review process by utilizing its Fraud Detection System (FDS) and conducting thorough consultations with review officers, thereby preventing a total loss of 147 million won.
The voice phishing organizations impersonated prosecutors, investigative agencies, and the Financial Supervisory Service, telling victims that they had been identified as perpetrators in a voice phishing case and luring them into taking out loans under the pretense of a 'clearance identity verification procedure.'
They instructed victims to open new mobile phone accounts and install malicious applications, effectively cutting off the victims' contact with the outside world. The organizations exercised advanced psychological control by forcing victims to stay in lodging facilities, write letters of reflection, and report their meal and sleeping times.
NH Nonghyup Capital detected these abnormal behaviors and suspicious circumstances of movement and control during the process of verifying the background of the loan application and the intended use of funds, and immediately halted the loan disbursement.
In two of the cases, the customers, who were virtually confined in lodging facilities, expressed extreme anxiety, prompting the review officers to report the incidents to the police. The police were dispatched to the scene and prevented further damage.
In the remaining case, the review officer maintained continuous phone contact and persuaded the customer to visit the police station. NH Nonghyup Capital continued to communicate with all three customers until the police arrived, providing psychological support.
The police took emergency measures such as freezing payments and tracking accounts to preemptively block the outflow of funds. The company is considering rewarding the review officers for their contributions.
Meanwhile, NH Nonghyup Capital is upgrading its FDS and refining its review system by incorporating characteristics based on age and occupation to strengthen the prevention of identity theft and voice phishing. The company also plans to gradually review the introduction of telecommunications company linkage and artificial intelligence (AI) models for voice phishing detection.
Jang Jonghwan, CEO of NH Nonghyup Capital, stated, "Strengthening the process to meticulously check for potential voice phishing damage at the review stage has proven effective," adding, "We will do our utmost to prevent financial accidents through proactive blocking measures."
