The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced on January 14 that Onion AI Co., Ltd. (AunionAI), a faculty-founded startup led by Professor Kim Hongguk of the School of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering, was featured as a noteworthy example of promising AI technology in a report analyzing 'CES 2026,' the world’s largest information technology and consumer electronics exhibition.
Samjong KPMG Economic Research Institute, in its report "Future Industry Trends as Seen at CES 2026," which analyzed the top 10 technology trends at CES held in Las Vegas, USA, in January this year, selected Onion AI’s AI-based automatic dubbing solution, 'AunionAI-DUB,' as one of the key technologies demonstrating the expanding role of AI across industries at CES 2026.
The report highlighted Onion AI’s AI-based automatic dubbing solution, 'AunionAI-DUB,' as one of the 'Top 10 Trend-Setting Innovative Products' in the AI sector, alongside NVIDIA’s next-generation AI semiconductors, Samsung Electronics’ quantum-resistant cryptography (PQC) security chip, and SK Hynix’s 16-layer high-bandwidth memory products. It introduced the solution as a case that simultaneously breaks down language barriers and enhances production efficiency in the next-generation global media, entertainment, and educational content production environment.
'AunionAI-DUB' is a solution in which AI analyzes the audio of videos produced in a specific language, automatically performs multilingual translation, and generates natural-sounding dubbed voices based on this. By considering not only simple dialogue translation but also various elements such as scene context, sound effects, and spatial sense, the solution has been recognized for significantly reducing the sense of unnaturalness that can occur in AI-automated dubbing content.
In particular, Samjong KPMG emphasized as a differentiating factor that Onion AI adopted an 'AI agent' approach, designing a structure in which the AI itself evaluates and corrects the quality of the automatic dubbing output. By having an AI agent verify and revise the translation and dubbing results generated by AI, the company has implemented a technical structure that maintains a high level of automation while ensuring stable content quality.
At the CES 2026 exhibition, Onion AI demonstrated its AI-based automatic dubbing solution applied to real content production environments, drawing attention from global media companies and platform stakeholders. The company showcased its technology, which not only synthesizes voices but also incorporates sound effects and spatial sense to naturally localize entire scenes, confirming the potential for global business expansion through discussions on overseas partnerships.
This solution features a fully automated dubbing process that enables natural voice synthesis and precise lip-syncing, and its structure of automatically evaluating and correcting AI-generated dubbing results provides high scalability for the global content market.
CEO Kim Hongguk is a technical expert with more than 30 years of research and industry experience in the voice and audio AI field, having led the development of speech recognition and synthesis technologies at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology and AT&T Labs in the United States. Building on the technology accumulated in the GIST laboratory, he founded Onion AI in 2023 and has since focused on lowering barriers to entry in global content production through AI technology.
CEO Kim stated, "It is meaningful that Onion AI’s technology has been recognized for both its industrial value and global competitiveness through the Samjong KPMG report," and added, "Based on the research achievements accumulated in the GIST laboratory, I will further develop this as a model case of faculty entrepreneurship where AI technology leads to practical solutions for industry and societal challenges."
