Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province has formed the "Gwangju-Jeonnam Administrative Integration Response Task Force" and held its first meeting on the 13th, in response to the accelerating discussions on the administrative integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam. The aim is to proactively address these changes and turn them into opportunities for regional development.
This Task Force has been established as a dedicated body to enable the county to take the lead in developing response strategies during the process of promoting the Gwangju-Jeonnam administrative integration. Its purpose is to systematically analyze the anticipated impact of integration across all sectors-including administration, finance, and industry-and to prepare comprehensive response measures in advance.
The Task Force will operate through six specialized divisions: Planning and Coordination, Climate-Energy-Economy, Population and Society, Safety and Construction, Culture and Tourism, and Agriculture and Fisheries. Each division will identify practical response tasks and develop concrete implementation strategies.
The county will focus its administrative capabilities on developing specialized strategies to emerge as a regional hub city under the government's "Five Axes, Three Special Zones" initiative. Plans are in place to proactively review and redefine various development projects that could not be actively pursued due to the boundaries of metropolitan administration, with the goal of establishing a new, synergy-driven integrated development strategy.
Additionally, the county will take preemptive steps to identify potential candidates for the relocation of public institutions, research institutes, and businesses, focusing on the energy, advanced mobility, and hydrogen industries. By attracting research institutes and various public institutions that can be linked to industries such as energy and future automobiles, the county aims to strengthen its industrial base. At the same time, strategies will be explored to attract medical and welfare infrastructure-such as the Southwest Nuclear Medicine Center-that can contribute to balanced development between the eastern and western regions.
A county official stated, "The Gwangju-Jeonnam administrative integration is more than just a simple reorganization of administrative districts; it is a significant opportunity to fundamentally reshape Yeonggwang County's future industrial structure and living conditions." The official added, "From the early stages of the integration discussions, Yeonggwang County will proactively prepare response strategies to secure finances, authority, and special provisions, and we will meticulously ensure that these efforts lead to tangible results after the integration is launched."
