Joint Response to Special Prosecutor for Unification Church Allegations and Fact-Finding on Daejang-dong
Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, and Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform New Party, have agreed to jointly propose a special prosecutor bill if the police investigation into allegations of nomination fund bribery involving former Democratic Party floor leader Kim Byungki and lawmaker Kang Sunwoo proves insufficient.
On January 13, Jang and Lee met at the National Assembly to discuss these matters. They also agreed to jointly pursue a special prosecutor investigation into allegations of political support from the Unification Church and to clarify the circumstances behind the withdrawal of the Daejang-dong appeal. Lee proposed a special prosecutor for the nomination fund and Unification Church cases, as well as a fact-finding investigation into the Daejang-dong case, stating, “We will fight until every last penny from the Daejang-dong group is recovered and returned to the people, and until those who received illicit political funds are properly investigated and punished.” Jang pointed out, “The Democratic Party is turning a blind eye to special prosecutor investigations into those currently in power, while only pursuing those related to former administrations.”

In particular, both parties expressed consensus on the need for a special prosecutor to investigate the Democratic Party’s nomination fund bribery allegations. Lee Donghun, chief spokesperson for the Reform New Party, told reporters after the meeting, “Evidence is still being destroyed in real time, so we strongly urge for a compulsory investigation, including arrests. If the investigation remains insufficient, we will jointly propose a special prosecutor bill.” Choi Boyoon, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, added, “We discussed what measures to take, including hunger strikes. As the opposition, we must strongly condemn this, and if necessary, we will continue to hold additional meetings.”
This meeting was arranged after Lee proposed a joint meeting of the three opposition party leaders and Jang accepted the proposal. Cho Kuk, leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, declined the invitation and did not attend. Lee commented, “If things continue as they are, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party will inevitably become a subsidiary party of the Democratic Party.” Jang also pressed, “If the opposition fails to fulfill its role, it is betraying the people.”
