Accelerating Overseas Expansion
with U.S. Label "Wiip" at the Forefront
SLL, which achieved a successful turnaround in its performance last year, is accelerating its push into the global market by using its U.S.-based label as a forward base.
On January 13, SLL announced that it will fully activate its U.S. subsidiary, Wiip. The company has already confirmed the film adaptation of the global hit "The Summer I Turned Pretty" and plans to supply more than five titles to global OTT platforms within this year. Building on the solid foundation established in its home market, SLL aims to make a full-fledged "quantum leap" in overseas markets.
The response from the securities industry has been positive. Most analysts believe that, starting this year, as the performance of the U.S. label becomes more visible, the overseas segment will drive earnings growth. An SLL representative stated, "By strengthening our global lineup centered on proven intellectual property (IP) and original series, we will prove our value as a true 'global studio,' going beyond a simple production company."
Last year, SLL reduced its dependence on a single platform and diversified its distribution channels, thereby strengthening its profit base. As of the third quarter, the company posted cumulative sales of 164.3 billion won and operating profit of 14.2 billion won. Despite challenging market volatility, SLL established a profitable structure through selective focus.
The company's systematic management of its "production cost recovery rate (recoupment rate)" is also noteworthy. It is analyzed that strategic partnerships with global OTT platforms have enabled more efficient rights sales and optimized cost structures, leading to improved operating profit.
