Responding to Abnormal Weather Events...
Proactive Measures Expected to Prevent Casualties
Seo-gu District in Gwangju Metropolitan City will install smart car blocking devices at the entrances to nine sections of the Seochangcheon walking trail in the Geumho-dong and Byeokjin-dong areas to prevent safety accidents caused by river flooding during heavy rainfall.
This project is being promoted to proactively prepare for disasters and strengthen the safety of walking trails frequently used by residents, as localized heavy rain has become more frequent due to recent climate change.
The smart car blocking device consists of a barrier, CCTV, and a remote controller. When weather advisories such as heavy rain warnings are issued, the device monitors river water levels in real time, allowing the disaster situation room to operate the automatic barrier remotely.
Previously, river management personnel had to go to the site and manually install blocking facilities, resulting in time delays and increased labor burden. With the introduction of this smart system, efficiency is expected to improve significantly.
Seo-gu District has allocated 300 million won from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Special Disaster and Safety Grant to begin construction early this year, with plans to complete the installation by April.
Seo-gu District Mayor Kim Ikang stated, "As abnormal weather events become more common, proactive measures to protect residents' lives and property are more important than ever," adding, "We will continue to prioritize resident safety and systematically expand our disaster management system."
