European allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are discussing the deployment of troops to Greenland to guard the Arctic, aiming to address President Donald Trump's security concerns.
According to the British daily The Telegraph on January 10 (local time), the United Kingdom has recently begun related preparatory work after meeting with officials from major countries such as Germany and France.
The member states have instructed the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO's military headquarters located in Belgium, to review additional measures that could be taken to strengthen security in the Arctic region.
President Trump, during a meeting with oil and gas company executives at the White House on January 9, expressed his determination to acquire Greenland, stating, "I want to make a deal, and that's the easy way, but if we don't do it the easy way, we'll do it the hard way," signaling his willingness to pursue the matter through coercive means if necessary.
The Telegraph also reported that if the U.S. administration rejects the plan to deploy NATO troops to Greenland, the European Union is preparing sanctions against American companies.
