European allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are in discussions about deploying troops to Greenland to guard the Arctic, aiming to address President Donald Trump's security concerns.
According to the British daily The Telegraph on January 10 (local time), the United Kingdom has recently begun preparations on this matter after meeting with officials from major countries such as Germany and France.
Member states have instructed the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO's military headquarters located in Belgium, to review additional measures that could be taken to strengthen Arctic security.
On January 9, during a meeting at the White House with executives from oil and gas companies, President Trump stated, "I want to make a deal, and that's the easy way, but if we don't do it the easy way, we'll do it the hard way," expressing his determination to acquire Greenland even by coercive means if necessary.
The Telegraph also reported that if the U.S. administration rejects the proposal to deploy NATO troops to Greenland, the European Union (EU) is preparing plans to impose sanctions on American companies.
