Legal AI Startup ChatLawyer Launches Chat-Based Legal Consultation App

Legal AI startup ChatLawyer has announced the launch of its chat-based legal consultation application.

ChatLawyer is a legal platform that integrates one-on-one chat consultations with attorneys and AI-powered case law and statute searches into a single interface. It is designed to allow users who may feel uncomfortable with phone or in-person consultations to freely explore legal information and receive advice.

In particular, to address the "hallucination" issue-widely cited as the biggest limitation of generative AI-the company has introduced a GraphRAG (graph-based retrieval-augmented generation) structure that organizes current Korean laws into a graph. Additionally, separate AI agents handle case law, statutes, and legal issues individually, distributing questions among themselves. This approach is intended to enhance both the quality and speed of responses.

ChatLawyer CEO Koo Bonmoo achieved a perfect score on the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) in the United States last summer. Instead of immediately enrolling in law school, he collaborated with fellow developers on research focused on large language models (LLMs) and multi-agent architectures, submitting related papers to academic journals. During this process, he refined AI structures applicable to the legal field and stated that, based on this research experience, he aimed to simultaneously improve both the accessibility and accuracy of legal services.

CEO Koo noted that, unlike standardized tests, real-world legal issues often do not have clear-cut answers. He explained that while current language models can serve as "AI law school students" or "AI law professors"-excelling at systematically analyzing and explaining the law-the role of an "AI attorney," which requires judgments based on individual circumstances and interests, demands a different design approach. The company stated that this distinction in decision-making structures was the starting point for the design of the ChatLawyer platform.
