Immigration Officers Open Fire in Portland, Oregon... 2 Injured

In Portland, Oregon, an incident occurred in which two people were injured by gunfire from federal immigration officers. This shooting followed another incident the previous day in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where a woman in her 30s was killed by a shot fired by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.

According to the Associated Press and other sources on January 8 (local time), Portland police stated, "Two people have been transported to the hospital due to a shooting involving federal officers."

The Portland office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also announced that it is investigating the "officer-involved shooting" that occurred at around 2:15 p.m. that day, adding, "Two people were injured in the incident involving Customs and Border Protection officers."

The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, but their conditions have not been disclosed.

Bob Day, Chief of the Portland Police Bureau, said, "This is still the early stage of the incident," and added, "We understand the heightened emotions and tension many are feeling after the Minneapolis shooting. However, we ask the community to remain calm as we work to gather more facts."

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and the city council have demanded that ICE suspend all operations in Portland until a thorough investigation is completed.

The previous day in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a white woman in her 30s was shot and killed by an ICE officer during an operation targeting undocumented immigrants.

The Donald Trump administration described the Minneapolis shooting as "defensive gunfire by an ICE officer in response to interference and threats from radical mobs during an immigration enforcement operation." However, as videos recorded by witnesses at the scene spread, protests against the Trump administration have been growing. According to the Associated Press, demonstrations are taking place or are scheduled to take place not only in Minneapolis but also in New York City, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Seattle, Los Angeles, and New Orleans.
