Gangwon Office of Education Achieves 91.42% First-Choice Placement Rate
Middle School Placement Numbers Down by Over 1,500 from Previous Year
Student Numbers Decrease by 12.16% Year-on-Year
The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education announced the results of the "2026 Middle School Admission Placement" for elementary school students advancing to middle school in the new semester on January 8.
This year, the number of students eligible for middle school placement is 10,899, including 5,567 boys and 5,332 girls, which is a decrease of 1,509 students (12.16%) compared to the previous year's 12,408.
Among the eight cities and counties including Chuncheon, 8,507 students were subject to school district placement. According to the lottery results, 7,777 students (91.42%) were assigned to their first-choice school. For 2,392 students in middle school districts where commuting is extremely inconvenient due to distance and transportation conditions, placement was made without a lottery, assigning them to schools based on their residential address.
Among the students subject to school district placement, those with athletic talent, students with special educational needs, and students from multi-child families were given priority placement at their desired schools. The remaining students submitted up to six school preferences, from first to sixth choice, and were assigned through a lottery using the NEIS-based middle school admission placement program managed by each Education Support Office’s Middle School Admission Placement Committee.
Meanwhile, applications for re-assignment, targeting students who move to other cities or provinces after this placement, students subject to discretionary placement, and students assigned to schools where their father or mother is employed as a teacher, will be accepted at each Education Support Office from January 19 to February 2. The results of the re-assignment will be announced on February 5.
Kim Namhak, Director of Administration, stated, "The placement results can be checked on the website of each Education Support Office. We ask that you confirm the schedule for your region and participate in the admission registration period, which will be held from January 12 to 16."
