Officially Unveiling the Vision: "Asia's No. 1 in AI Medical Convergence"
Soonchunhyang University has transitioned its AI Medical Convergence innovation model to the implementation stage following its official designation as a Glocal University. From January 7 to 8, Soonchunhyang University held the Glocal University Project Group inauguration ceremony and workshop in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, officially announcing the launch of the project.
According to Soonchunhyang University, this event served as an opportunity to publicly announce the commencement of the Glocal University Project’s implementation. More than 100 participants attended, including officials from South Chungcheong Province and the cities of Asan and Cheonan.
At the event, Soonchunhyang University presented its vision: “Together with the region, to the world! Asia’s No. 1 in AI Medical Convergence,” emphasizing that the project is not merely financial support but a region-led national higher education policy.
The university identified the following as core tasks: ▲ a complete overhaul of the academic structure for AI Medical Convergence ▲ establishment of the “AI Medical Convergence Triangle Campus” connecting education, research, demonstration, and commercialization ▲ and a strategy to link the cultivation of locally based talent with the creation of new industries.
At its affiliated Cheonan Hospital, the university plans to establish an AI Medical Convergence Technology Demonstration Headquarters, aiming to build a system that connects local industry, academia, research, and hospitals based on large-scale clinical big data. This will enable a full-cycle medical AI model that supports everything from clinical demonstration to corporate support.
The university will also establish an AI Medical Convergence Innovation Education Center to restructure its academic system and introduce a 3-Layer (liberal arts, major, field training) curriculum and ACT (AI Medical Convergence Practical Training) program specialized for all students.
Additionally, Soonchunhyang University plans to attract 3,000 global talents by establishing international colleges and graduate schools exclusively for foreign students and providing tailored residential support.
President Song Byungkook stated, “The Glocal University Project represents a paradigm shift in higher education jointly designed by the region and the nation,” adding, “We will implement a model that starts in the region and expands to the world, centered on AI Medical Convergence.”
