At around 12:45 p.m. on January 7, a sports utility electric vehicle traveling in the second lane toward Changnyeong on National Route 5 in Seongsan-myeon, Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, struck a construction site traffic cone and then hit a flagman.
As a result of this accident, a male flagman in his 60s, referred to as Mr. A, sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest, but passed away during treatment.
At the time of the incident, work was underway to install utility poles at the site. Although other workers were present nearby, there were no additional casualties.
The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 50s referred to as Mr. B, was found not to be under the influence of alcohol and held a valid driver’s license.
The police believe that Mr. B failed to pay proper attention to the road ahead. He has been booked without detention on charges of causing death under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, including the vehicle’s speed at the time of the incident.
