Final Policy Coordination Meeting of the First Democratic Party Floor Leadership on January 8
Moon Jinseok: "Raced Breathlessly for the Success of the Lee Administration"
New Floor Leader to Be Elected on the 11th... Second Leadership Team to Be Formed
With the resignation of former Floor Leader Kim Byungki, the first floor leadership team of the Democratic Party of Korea since the launch of the Lee Jaemyung administration has concluded its activities. The unresolved tasks related to people's livelihoods and reforms have now been handed over to the second leadership team, which will be led by the new floor leader to be elected on January 11.
At the Democratic Party's policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido on January 8, Moon Jinseok, Acting Floor Leader, reflected on the conclusion of the first leadership team's term, saying, "It has been a breathless journey to ensure the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration and to take responsibility for the lives of all citizens. As the ruling party, we have never taken this responsibility lightly."
Moon continued, "What helped us endure this turbulent period was the steadfastness of the people in their daily lives. Thanks to the guidance of the sovereign citizens, politics was able to find its direction. I would like to express my respect and gratitude to the people."
He added, "The year 2025 was relentless. As the saying goes, the world continued to be shaken, and politics was required to make decisions at every moment. The demands of the people were clear: 'Respond not with words, but with results.' The Democratic Party worked to meet these demands through legislation and the budget."
He went on to highlight the achievements so far, including: ▲ achieving the three major special prosecutors (insurrection, Kim Keonhee, and Chae Haebyeong) ▲ amending the Government Organization Act ▲ abolishing the Prosecutors' Office ▲ passing the Yellow Envelope Act (Articles 2 and 3 of the Trade Union Act) in the National Assembly ▲ passing the first and second amendments to the Commercial Act in the National Assembly ▲ processing the 2026 budget bill within the legal deadline ▲ passing more than 150 livelihood-related bills during the filibuster (unlimited debate) period.
Moon stated, "These were the results of putting people's livelihoods ahead of competition. I cannot say that our choices and efforts were always sufficient. There were moments when we fell short and failed to meet expectations, but we accept that responsibility as our own." He added, "However, one thing is clear: even amid chaos, we held firmly to our commitment that the National Assembly would not come to a halt."
He also emphasized that the remaining tasks would be carried on by the second leadership team. Moon said, "There is still much to be done. The insurrection trials must proceed more quickly, and the public's demand for reform is urgent. The remaining tasks of ending the insurrection, restoring livelihoods, and achieving major social reforms will be inherited by the next leadership team. Ensuring the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration and the reconstruction of the Republic of Korea will also remain our responsibility until the end."
In conclusion, Moon said, "This Sunday (the 11th), a new floor leader will be elected. On the same day, a by-election for the Supreme Council will also be held. The Democratic Party will once again unite to fully uphold the will of the people. Each of us will fulfill our roles well in our respective positions. We will act. We will show results."
Meanwhile, for the upcoming by-election for the next floor leader to be held on January 11, Assemblymen Park Jeong, Baek Hyeryeon, Jin Sungjun, and Han Byungdo (all three-term lawmakers, listed in Korean alphabetical order) have declared their candidacy.
