Yanggu County Introduces
Differentiated Support System for Voluntary License Return
by Senior Drivers Aged 65 and Older
Starting this year, Yanggu County in Gangwon Province will introduce a differentiated support system that provides additional transportation subsidies to senior drivers aged 65 and older who voluntarily return their driver's licenses, provided that actual driving records are verified.
The support program for voluntary return of driver's licenses by senior drivers offers a one-time benefit to residents of Yanggu County aged 65 or older who voluntarily surrender their licenses. Each eligible individual receives 100,000 KRW in transportation subsidies and taxi coupons worth 200,000 KRW.
From this year, if actual driving records are submitted as proof, an additional 100,000 KRW in transportation subsidies will be provided, allowing recipients to receive a total of 200,000 KRW in transportation subsidies and 200,000 KRW in taxi coupons. To verify actual driving records, applicants must submit documents such as auto insurance papers, employment verification for transportation workers, or vehicle registration certificates that can confirm their driving history.
To apply for license return, applicants must visit their local town or township office or the Urban Transportation Division at the county office, complete the application form, and surrender their driver's license. It is important to note that all driving licenses will be canceled upon return, so applicants should exercise caution when applying.
Kim Youngmi, Head of the Urban Transportation Division, stated, "We are implementing the support program for voluntary return of driver's licenses by senior drivers throughout the year to create a safer transportation environment for our residents," and added, "We will continue to promote policies aimed at preventing traffic accidents involving senior drivers and establishing a safe transportation environment."
Meanwhile, in Yanggu County, a total of 237 people have received transportation subsidies and taxi coupons by returning their driver's licenses since the program began in 2021, with 50 participants in 2023, 59 in 2024, and 47 in 2025.
