On January 7, Jeollanam-do signed a joint agreement with Gangjin County at Gangjin Art Hall to swiftly promote the Gangjin Bay Cross-Bridge Construction Project, officially launching the full-scale implementation of the project.
The agreement ceremony was attended by over 700 people, including Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok, Gangjin County Governor Kang Jinwon, Jeollanam-do Provincial Council Member Cha Youngsoo, Gangjin County Council Chairman Seo Soonseon, and local residents.
The Gangjin Bay Cross-Bridge Construction Project is a massive initiative with a total length of 2.5 kilometers and a project budget of 160 billion won. The project was first proposed by Gangjin County during the Jeollanam-do Policy Vision Tour in September 2025, after which both parties discussed joint implementation strategies.
This agreement includes two main implementation strategies. First, to alleviate the financial burden, both sides set a joint goal of upgrading Local Road No. 819 to a national road or a national support local road and will cooperate to ensure this is prioritized. Second, if the project proceeds as a local road construction initiative, the total project cost will be shared equally, with Jeollanam-do and Gangjin County each covering 50%.
To accelerate the project, Jeollanam-do and Gangjin County plan to begin the basic planning study in the first half of this year, followed by feasibility studies and investment reviews by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in the second half.
Once the Gangjin Bay Cross-Bridge is completed, it is expected to unify the living areas currently divided by Gangjin Bay, and significantly improve tourism and logistics flows. Synergistic effects with nearby road projects, such as the Gwangju-Wando Expressway, are also anticipated.
Governor Kim Youngrok stated, "The Gangjin Bay Cross-Bridge will serve as an important milestone, opening a new chapter and future for Gangjin," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to enhance transportation welfare for Gangjin residents and promote regional development."
